Tinubu’s congratulatory message was conveyed through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, titled ‘President Tinubu celebrates former head of state, Gen.Yakubu Gowon, at 89.’
“His (Gowon’s) love and passion for Nigeria, as well as his determination to see into manifestation the unique gifts and combined strengths of all Nigerians, irrespective of faith, tribe, or any other difference, remains a pace-setting attribute of leadership that all present and future Nigerian leaders must emulate,” Tinubu said.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan also felicitated Gowon, describing him as an inspiring and humble leader.
Jonathan, in a goodwill message he signed and sent to journalists by his spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, affirmed that Gowon “has contributed immensely to the unity, peace and development of Nigeria.”
“As a leader, you have continued to offer yourself for national service long after leaving office; mobilizing citizens towards prayer and national reconciliation. As you celebrate, I wish you more fulfilling years in sound health, peace, and joy,” Jonathan said.
Kanyi Daily recalls that General Yakubu Gowon, retd, said that he accidentally became Nigeria’s Head of State at age 31, adding that he never planned to be the nation’s leader.
