Afenifere Urges Tinubu to Fulfill Federalism Commitment, Advocates for 2014 National Conference Implementation

Afenifere, a Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, has expressed concern about President Bola Tinubu’s perceived lack of dedication to achieving true federalism in the country, especially considering his previous stance on the matter as the former Governor of Lagos State.

The Yoruba group emphasized that, in his capacity as the President of the nation and a prominent figure in national politics, Bola Tinubu should use his influence to guarantee the implementation of the 2014 National Conference recommendations.

The group, in a communiqué after the end of its monthly meeting held at Isanya-Ogbo, Ogun State, the country home of its leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, urged the Federal Government to have the courage to align and harmonize the resolutions of the 2014 National Conference with the reports of the APC (El-Rufai) Committee on Federalism.

The group, however, affirmed that necessary mechanisms had been established to mobilize and rally Nigerians, ensuring the realization of federalism. They called on other well-meaning organizations and citizens to prepare for collective efforts to ensure true federalism.

The group also raised concerns about the lack of transparency in the appointment of officials by the Presidency to the National Electoral Commission (INEC).

They called on the government to ensure fairness and inclusivity in the selection process, highlighting the crucial need for independent and impartial individuals in key positions within the electoral body, as their decisions have a profound impact on the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.

It further stressed that Afenifere shared in the current economic anguish of Nigerians in terms of skyrocketed costs of goods, services, and energy.

Meanwhile, Afenifere announced the appointment of Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo as its new National Publicity Secretary, following an earlier suspension.

The group said: “Adejumo, an alumnus of the prestigious University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and indigene of Ibadan, where he holds the traditional title of Mogaji Ikolaba, is now the National Publicity Secretary of the Yoruba Summit Group and a member of the National Caucus of the Afenifere.”

Kanyi Daily recalls that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi had paid a courtesy visit to Ayo Adebanjo.
