O.J. Simpson, the renowned former football star famously accused and subsequently acquitted of the 1994 murders of his ex-wife and her friend, has passed away at the age of 76.
Announcing the sad news, his family shared on X (Formerly Twitter):
“Yesterday, April 10th, our beloved father, Orenthal James Simpson, peacefully passed away after his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this period of mourning, the family kindly requests privacy and understanding”.
In May 2023, Simpson shared a video on X, disclosing his recent bout with cancer and his successful experience with chemotherapy. However, in February 2024, reports emerged from a Las Vegas television station indicating Simpson’s return to treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer.
Simpson refuted claims of being in hospice care in a subsequent video on X, though he neither confirmed nor denied his illness. Two days later, in another video update, Simpson expressed gratitude to those who had supported him, stating, “My health is improving. While I’m dealing with some challenges, I believe I’m nearing recovery.”
Simpson, famously known as “The Juice,” achieved remarkable success as both a collegiate and professional football player, furthering his fame and wealth through roles as a sportscaster, actor in film and television, and prominent corporate figure.
12-Years after he was acquitted for the murder of his wife and her friend, Simpson was arrested in September 2007 after he led a group of men into a Las Vegas hotel and casino to steal, at gunpoint, what he claims was his own sports memorabilia. Simpson was charged with a number of felony counts, including kidnapping and armed robbery. The following year, he was found guilty and sentenced to up to 33 years in prison. Simpson was released on parole on Oct. 1, 2017.
In 1994, while OJ Simpson fled the police and led them on a wild chase which was televised, his lawyers read a letter to the nation;
“I’ve had a good life. I’m proud of how I lived. My mama taught me to do unto others. I treated people the way I wanted to be treated,”
“Don’t feel sorry for me,” the letter went on. “I’ve had a great life, great friends. Please think of the real O.J. and not this lost person. … Thanks for making my life special. I hope I helped yours.”
May his soul rest in peace.
