KanyiDaily recalls that Tunde Onakoya recently broke the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest-ever chess marathon with a time of 60 hours at Times Square, New York.
The founder of Chess-in-slums received a warm reception upon his return to Nigeria. He was greeted with joyous singing and dancing by well-wishers at the Lagos airport.
Onakoya surpassed the previous record set by Norwegian players Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad, who played for 56 hours and 9 minutes in 2018.
Expressing his motivation behind the marathon, Onakoya stated that his goal was to raise funds and awareness for providing educational opportunities to underprivileged children across Africa.
KanyiDaily recalls that President Bola Tinubu had congratulated Tunde Onakoya for his remarkable feat in setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.
