Blackout In Nigeria As National Grid Collapses Again For Fifth Time In 2024

The National Grid in Nigeria has collapsed for the fifth time this year, causing blackouts in many areas in the country.

Various power distribution companies reported that their systems stopped working, leading to widespread outages on Monday, August 5, 2024.

Data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) showed that the grid crashed around 1:30 pm, with power dropping from 3,241 megawatts (MW) to 1,255 MW in just an hour.

At the time of this report, out of 21 power plants connected to the grid, five are completely down, and 17 are still producing electricity.

The TCN has not yet explained why the grid collapsed.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident on social media, stating the grid failed at 2:30 pm.

AEDC wrote, “We understand that some of our customers are still without power due to a system failure from the national grid at 2.55pm today, 5th August 2024.

“Please be assured that the system is gradually stabilising, and we are working diligently with all relevant stakeholders to restore power to the affected areas as quickly as possible.”

The national grid has now collapsed five times in 2024, with previous incidents occurring on February 4, March 28, April 15, and July 6.

KanyiDaily recalls that Nigeria was plunged into darkness four months ago when the national grid collapsed ahead of the Easter holidays.
