17 Elevate Africa Fellows Gain Exclusive Insights from Sahara Group and Providus Bank

A new wave of African leaders is stepping forward as the Elevate Africa Fellowship welcomes its inaugural cohort. Seventeen professionals, chosen from a competitive pool of 3,447 applicants across 37 countries, have embarked on a transformative journey aimed at redefining leadership and innovation across the continent.

Founded by Royal Majesties Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, the 21st Olu of Warri, and Olori Atuwatse III, the Queen Consort of the Warri Kingdom, the initiative is backed by a $1 million commitment.

The fellowship commenced with a high-profile welcome dinner on Sunday, where former Nigerian Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, shared thought-provoking insights on governance, the importance of ethical leadership and integrity.

During the first phase of the program, the fellows visited Sahara Group, a leading energy conglomerate. They were introduced to the company’s broad investment portfolio and its “Making A Difference” (MAD) philosophy, which emphasizes corporate responsibility and impact-driven growth. The experience provided valuable exposure to the energy and technology sectors, offering a firsthand look at innovative business models driving change in Africa.

The cohort also explored the rapidly evolving fintech landscape at Providus Bank, where they engaged with executives and learned about the bank’s journey into Fintech and its earlier discussion with Paystack during the initial stages. This session provided insights into financial technology’s role in expanding trade, fostering entrepreneurship, and driving economic development across the continent.

The fellowship, led by CEO Daniel Ikuenobe, is structured as a multi-phase initiative. After the immersive experience in Nigeria, the fellows will travel to Mauritius for an intensive leadership development program. The final phase will be in October, when participants will present their ideas and innovations designed to tackle Africa’s pressing issues.

Reflecting on the experience, Daniel Chisoni, a Malawian visionary leader, shared that the experience has been very valuable. “The exposure to innovative business models and leadership strategies has been invaluable. This fellowship is shaping us into leaders who can drive real change in our communities,” he remarked.

Beyond leadership training, the Elevate Africa Fellowship seeks to reclaim Africa’s historical narrative and empower leaders with the skills to create lasting change. “Africa’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and excellence. We are here to build on that legacy and shape the future,” Ikuenobe emphasized.
