Akpabio Denies Sexual Harassment Allegations As Natasha Akpoti Files New Petition

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has denied accusations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Speaking at Wednesday’s plenary session following a week-long recess, Akpabio dismissed the allegations made against him by Natasha Akpoti in February.

He said, “At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother, and I have always upheld respect for women. I was even awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.”

He acknowledged the widespread discussion of the allegations on social media and the numerous calls he has received since February 25.

The Senate president, however, urged Nigerians, the media, and online commentators to avoid speculation and wait for the court’s verdict.

Shortly after Akpabio’s remarks, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan formally presented a petition under Order 40, accusing him of sexual harassment and abuse of office.

The Kogi lawmaker sought permission to submit the document to the Senate for official review.

In response, the Senate referred the petition to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, instructing it to investigate the matter promptly.

Tensions between Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Godswill Akpabio escalated in February following a disagreement over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber.

The incident led to heated exchanges and the subsequent harassment allegations, fueling concerns over professionalism and decorum within the Senate.

On Wednesday, Akpoti-Uduaghan entered the chamber accompanied by her husband. In a brief public display of affection, she shared a kiss with him before taking her seat.

Notably, when Akpabio arrived to commence the session, she remained seated—breaking the tradition of standing as a sign of respect for the presiding officer.

Meanwhile, supporters of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan gathered at the National Assembly to protest against the alleged sexual harassment by Godswill Akpabio.
