Ex-Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa Dumps PDP For APC

Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa and all members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, have moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made on Wednesday in Asaba by Senator James Manager after a meeting with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the Government House that lasted over six hours.

According to Manager, the decision to leave the PDP was unanimous, involving the current governor, his predecessor, the Speaker of the House, the state PDP chairman, all local government chairmen, and other party leaders.

“We cannot continue to be in a sinking boat,” he said.

The state’s Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, also confirmed the mass defection, saying it was a strategic move to ensure continued growth, security, and good governance in Delta.

He explained that the PDP no longer aligned with the vision for Delta’s future, comparing it to “palm wine that has lost its taste.”

There is a need for us to adjust our drinking patterns. And in adjusting that drinking pattern, we needed to make a decision that would further help to cement the development in our state, to build the court of law that has existed in our state, to further advance the cause of security and the welfare of our people, and, to a large extent, ensure that development in Delta is not truncated,” Aniagwu stated.

He continued, “In taking that decision, we concluded that leaving the PDP was very necessary for us to be able to collaborate and build a state that every Deltan will be proud of. We believe that what is happening, and the state of the PDP, is akin to that palm wine whose taste has changed — and there was a need for us to change the drinking party.”

Aniagwu hinted at a public event to officially declare their move to the APC, expected to happen by Monday.

By the grace of God, on Monday next week, we will be able to make a very big statement confirming that we are moving into the APC,” he said.

This major shift is seen as a game-changer in Delta politics, potentially shaking up the power balance in the South-South region.

KanyiDaily recalls that Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori also left the PDP and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
