Oba Abimbola Owoade had earlier received his staff and instrument of office from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde back in January.
His coronation ceremony was held today, Saturday, April 5, at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo Town.
Governor Makinde led a crowd of dignitaries who came to witness the historic event.
Among those in attendance were the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams.
The coronation signaled the official beginning of Oba Owoade’s reign and the start of a new chapter in the long history of the Oyo Kingdom—one of the most respected traditional institutions in Yoruba land.
To ensure a smooth event, the Oyo State Government strengthened security across the town and nearby communities by deploying security personnel to key spots.
Oba Owoade completed the traditional 21-day Oro Ipebi rites last Saturday, March 29, which is a key part of the process before a new Alaafin can take the throne.
KanyiDaily had reported that the former Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi died in April 22, 2022, at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.
