The state police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest during a conversation with PUNCH Metro on Thursday.
He said the incident happened around 3 a.m. on Monday, though the reason for the shooting is still unknown.
Hundeyin stated that the suspect fled the scene immediately after opening fire, leaving the boy dead on the spot.
Following the killing, outraged residents and local youths staged a protest, carrying the teenager’s body through parts of Epe to demand justice.
The demonstration caused tension in the area, prompting police and other security forces to intervene using tear gas and firing warning shots to disperse the crowd.
The victim’s body was later recovered and taken to a hospital.
A Facebook post from Ibrandtv Media detailed the event and the community’s response, emphasizing the public’s demand for accountability.
The user wrote, “A 17-year-old boy was tragically shot dead by an OPC member at 3 am in Epe. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the incident.
“In response, angry youths and community members took to the streets, carrying the victim’s corpse in a protest from Itapo to highlight their outrage over the loss.
“The police and security agencies intervened, using gunshot tear gas to disperse the crowd, and retrieved the corpse, taking it to the hospital for further procedures.”
Hundeyin had earlier announced that a manhunt was underway.
On Thursday, he confirmed that the suspect had been caught and handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
