The gunfight, which took place on Wednesday night, caused panic across the community, although security forces have since taken control of the area to prevent further violence.
According to reports, two people—including a woman—were rescued from the scene and are now receiving medical treatment, while several others were injured during the attack.
Anambra State Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, saying that efforts are ongoing to find and arrest those responsible.
The PPRO, in a statement said: “The Police operatives led by the Area Commander Aguata, complemented by the Joint Security Force, comprising the Army, Navy, Civil Defence and Vigilante operatives, have taken over the scene of the alleged cult related shooting by 8.40pm on 19th June, 2025 at the Total Junction and Tipper junction all in Oko, Orumba North local government area.
“Two victims, including a lady who is currently receiving treatment in a hospital, were rescued. Sadly, the incident recorded the death of two persons and the alleged abduction of two others.”
Eyewitnesses told the police that the attackers came on motorcycles and in a black Lexus SUV with no license plate, and started shooting randomly at Total Junction before moving to Tipper Junction, where two people were allegedly kidnapped.
“Four persons were allegedly wounded including a lady that is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. The two others were allegedly abducted at the Tipper junction before they fled the scene”, Ikenga said.
Ikenga assured the public that the police were following up on leads and eyewitness accounts in order to track down the attackers.
He also urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue, noting that the command is working with all available information and security resources to bring those involved to justice.
