Buhari And Aisha Were Divorced Before His Death – Farooq Kperogi Reveals

Farooq Kperogi, a U.S-based journalism professor and public commentator, has claimed that former First Lady Aisha Buhari was no longer married to the late President Muhammadu Buhari at the time of his death.

In a post shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Farooq Kperogi alleged that Aisha had already reverted to her maiden name, Aisha Halilu, before Buhari passed away.

He also claimed Aisha was initially reluctant to travel to London to care for Buhari during his illness because they were no longer husband and wife.

Kperogi noted that she eventually agreed to go after much persuasion.

He also pointed to Aisha’s long absence from much of Buhari’s post-presidency life and her limited role during his final days as further evidence supporting claims that the couple had separated.

He noted that after Buhari’s burial, it was mainly the late president’s children, especially his son and daughters, who received dignitaries and visitors, not Aisha herself.

This, he argued, reflected her reduced involvement in Buhari’s personal affairs and suggested she no longer held the role of wife in any formal sense.

Kperogi went on to question the credibility of Aisha’s reported public appeal for forgiveness on Buhari’s behalf, given that they were allegedly divorced before his death.

According to him, it raises serious doubts about when and under what circumstances Buhari could have made such a request to her.

The post reads, “Aisha Buhari, Divorce, and Forgiveness Claim By Farooq Kperogi

People have been circulating a quote attributed to Aisha Buhari, claiming that Buhari asked her to seek forgiveness from Nigerians on his behalf.

I can’t confirm the authenticity of that claim, but what I do know is that before Buhari’s death, he and Aisha were no longer married.

They had divorced, and Aisha reverted to her maiden name, Aisha Halilu.

If you paid close attention, you would notice that Aisha didn’t go to Daura when he retired to the town after leaving office. Buhari was also alone when he later relocated to Kaduna.

In fact, when he fell ill and it was suggested that Aisha travel to London to care for him, she reportedly hesitated because she was no longer his wife. She eventually went in the last few days before he died, but only after intense persuasion.

Even now, during this period of mourning, she seems understandably conflicted about her role.

So, I’m genuinely curious to know when and where Buhari told her to beg Nigerians for forgiveness. Where did she even say this?”

KanyiDaily recalls that Muhammadu Buhari was buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
