Nigerian Man Arrested For Defrauding Indian Woman On Matrimonial Site With Fake Gift Promises

A Nigerian man, Musa Ali has been arrested in India for allegedly scamming a woman he met on a matrimonial website.

The suspect was arrested by the Faridabad Cyber Police in the Mehrauli area of Delhi on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

Musa Ali was arraigned before a local court on Thursday and has since been placed in judicial custody.

According to the police, the case began when a woman filed a complaint stating that she had connected with a man online who claimed to be living in Germany, with his family based in Brazil.

The police said their conversation soon moved to WhatsApp, where the man told her he planned to move to India with his family.

On April 9, he allegedly told her he was sending a package filled with jewellery, clothes, and US dollars as gifts.

Two days later, the woman said she received a call from someone claiming to be from the Customs Office. She was informed that she needed to pay a fee of Rs 37,500 to receive the package.

“When I checked by entering the number on the tracking link, the courier was showing at the Delhi Airport Customs Office.

“I deposited Rs 37,500 in the account mentioned but after some time, I got another call and was asked to deposit Rs 98,700, and I deposited but did not receive any courier,” as the woman said in her complaint.

Following her complaint, police said cybercrime officers tracked down and arrested Musa Ali.

“The arrested accused was identified as Musa Ali Ikeja of Nigeria and was currently residing in Mehrauli, Delhi.

“During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused’s partner used to talk to girls through matrimonial apps… and get money deposited in their accounts. After which the accused used to withdraw the money from the ATM and give it to his partner.

“The accused had been living in India since November 2022. He was sent to jail after questioning,” said the spokesperson of Faridabad Police.

KanyiDaily recalls that the police in Mumbai recently arrested a 34-year-old Nigerian woman, Yenna Christina Idowu, after she was allegedly caught with cocaine worth more than ₦254 million (approximately Rs1.42 crore).
