Godswill Akpabio’s return follows days of speculation on social media suggesting he was gravely ill and receiving treatment in London.
He touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja around 4 a.m on Monday, where he was welcomed at the presidential wing by fellow senators, aides, and supporters.
Speaking to reporters at the airport, Akpabio dismissed the rumours about his failing health, describing them as “the imagination of the purveyors”.
“There’s nothing like such. I’m fit as a fiddle. I only stopped over in London for a short vacation,” he said.
Before heading to the UK, the senate president had attended the sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 29 to 31.
He said Nigeria’s delegation contributed significantly to discussions on strengthening democracy and improving collaboration among different arms of government.
Looking ahead, Akpabio assured Nigerians that the senate will engage in “robust legislative activities” once it reconvenes from recess.
The 62-year-old politician, elected president of the 10th senate in June 2023, is a former governor of Akwa Ibom State and also served as minister of Niger Delta affairs.
KanyiDaily recalls that Godswill Akpabio recently asked the Court of Appeal in Abuja to overturn a federal high court ruling that ordered the Senate to lift the suspension of Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
