Malami, who now leads the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state, was said to have been on a condolence visit in Birnin Kebbi when the incident occurred.
Witnesses told Channels Television that around 10 vehicles were damaged, while some of his supporters sustained injuries.
Speaking to journalists after the attack, Malami explained that his trip had nothing to do with politics.
According to him, he was only in the state to sympathize with families who had lost loved ones during his absence.
“I was in Birnin Kebbi solely to pay condolences to families who lost their loved ones while I was away, not for political campaigns.
“It’s painful and unfortunate. Some thugs emerged from the APC state headquarters, armed with weapons and stones, and attacked our convoy, destroying vehicles and injuring our supporters.
“When it comes to politics in Kebbi State, there is no retreat, no surrender,” Malami said in an interview with journalists.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi, however, denied any link to the attack on Malami.
The party’s spokesperson, Isa Assalafy, condemned the attack but dismissed Malami’s claims.
“Kebbi is a peaceful state. No government that enjoys massive support from the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want the peace of the state to be disrupted,” Assalafy said.
He further accused security officers in Malami’s convoy of firing shots during the clash, which he claimed worsened the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, police spokesperson in Kebbi State had not issued a statement regarding the incident.
This comes weeks after Abubakar Malami defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
