The speculation began after a Facebook page identified as “Mzansi Celebrities* falsely claimed that the actor had died from “complications related to diabetes and spine surgery.”
The post described Chiwetalu Agu’s supposed death as a national tragedy and left many fans confused.
“Veteran Nollywood Legend Chiwetala Agu Passes Away at 66! Shocking battle with diabetes & spine surgery ends in tragedy,” the post reads.
“The beloved actor’s final fight was a heartbreaking struggle against relentless illness and painful surgery that stole a shining star from the silver screen.
“Fans and colleagues are left devastated as the curtain falls on a life filled with talent, passion, and unforgettable roles. The nation mourns a true icon lost too soon!”
Reacting in a video shared on his Instagram page, Chiwetalu Agu described the story as “diabolical” and declared that he still has many years ahead.
The actor stressed that he intends to live long enough to carry his grandchildren and vowed instead to “bury my enemies.”
According to him, the fake report was nothing more than a stunt by a small blog desperate for likes and engagement.
Agu said that if such claims had come from a major media outlet, he would have taken legal action for defamation and damages.
He urged fans and the public to ignore the false story, report the page spreading it, and not fall for malicious attempts to tarnish his image.
“I woke up to this very post, all because of likes, views and comments. A blogger wrongly announced my death and posted ‘rest in peace’ with my picture,” he said.
“Now let me shock you: I, Chief Chiwetalu Agu of Etiti Amokwe, Enugu State, am not going to die anytime soon.
“Instead, I will be the one to bury my enemies. Na who dig pit go fall inside. I am yet to carry my grandchildren; I must carry them in good health when my children are ready.
“If it were these big bloggers, I would have sued them for defamation, economic and business damages, and cyber harassment, knowing something would come out of the lawsuit. But lo and behold, it’s a poor blog still struggling for likes and views.
“What baffles me is that in this 21st century some of you are gullible enough to believe without confirming.
“Fans and family, please disregard any rumours and rebuke anyone spreading such diabolical news about me and report the page that’s spreading the information.”
