Nnamdi Kanu has been held in detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in June 2021.
The detention of the IPOB leader, who faces charges including treasonable felony and terrorism, has been controversial, with several court orders granting him bail ignored by the authorities.
In a statement on Thursday, Atiku criticized the refusal to honor the court’s bail orders, calling it “an assault on justice.”
He also expressed full backing for Omoyele Sowore’s campaign demanding Kanu’s immediate release or proper prosecution.
“The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains an open sore on our nation’s conscience and a stain on our belief in the rule of law.
“Defying court orders that granted him bail is an abuse of power and an assault on justice. I, therefore, lend my voice in full support of the campaign led by Yele Sowore for his immediate release or due prosecution.
“We fail as patriots if we allow Kanu’s case to fester as yet another wound this nation refuses to heal” Atiku wrote on X.
Atiku’s statement came after Omoyele Sowore announced that a protest march to the presidential villa over Nnamdi Kanu’s detention is scheduled for October 20.
