Graham Potter Appointed As Sweden Head Coach Weeks After West Ham Sacking

Former West Ham manager, Graham Potter has been appointed as the new head coach of Sweden’s national football team.

The Swedish Football Association made the announcement on Monday, saying Potter has been chosen to help the team get back on track in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Sweden currently sit near the bottom of Group B, with only one point from four matches, a disappointing start that led to the dismissal of Danish coach Jon Dahl Tomasson last week.

A statement on the Swedish FA’s website,  said the main objective of the appointment is “to create optimal conditions to reach the World Cup in the summer of 2026″.

Graham Potter, who was dismissed by West Ham last month, is no stranger to Swedish football.

He managed Östersund from 2011 to 2018, leading them from the lower leagues to European competition before moving to Swansea City.

“I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired,” Potter said in a statement on the FA’s website.

“Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world’s best leagues during the week. My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer.”

Kim Källström, the Swedish FA’s director of football and a former international player, welcomed Potter’s appointment.

He said, “It feels very good that Graham is coming in as the national coach for the men’s national team.

“We are all aware of the situation we are in and believe that with his leadership skills he will bring the team together in a good way.

“He is tactically skilled at creating conditions to win matches and has an ability to identify players’ strengths and how they interact in the best way.”

Sweden had been seeking a new head coach since the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson following their 1-0 loss to Kosovo on 13 October, a result that made automatic qualification from their group impossible.

KanyiDaily also reported that Nottingham Forest sacked manager Ange Postecoglou after just 39 days in charge, following a 3-0 home loss to Chelsea.
