A video that surfaced online in June 2025 showed the women crying for help while lying in a pool of blood after she sustained serious injuries during the attack.
It was gathered that Baragon allegedly attacked Ayanate after she turned down his proposal upon discovering he was already married with four children, a claim he denied.
In a statement issued on October 17, the police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said that officers from the Human Rights Department at the State Headquarters in Port Harcourt launched an investigation immediately after seeing the viral video.
Using intelligence and technical tracking, the police arrested the suspect on October 13, 2025.
“It was alleged that the suspect’s motive for the assault stems from the victim’s rejection of his marriage overtures, prompted by her discovery that the suspect was already married with four children, an allegation he denied.
“During further interrogation, the suspect voluntarily confessed that he used bottles and stabbed the victim.
“The suspect is currently in Police custody, while the victim is receiving Medical treatment in the Hospital, and an in-depth investigation has been launched to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement read
SP Iringe-Koko also noted that the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, praised the officers for their swift response and thanked the public for providing useful information that helped in tracking down the suspect.
