Policeman, Three Others Killed In Truck Collision On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

At least four people have been confirmed dead following a multiple-truck crash on Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday night.

According to reports, the accident involved several heavy-duty vehicles, including a fuel tanker, which collided on the busy bridge.

It was gathered that one of the victims, believed to be a truck occupant, was burnt beyond recognition.

The crash caused a major traffic gridlock on the expressway, leaving many motorists stranded for hours.

Eyewitnesses said one of the trucks, loaded with unidentified goods, lost control and rammed into the concrete barrier of the bridge.

The force of the impact detached the truck’s head, sending it plunging into the river below.

Some occupants of the truck were still missing at the time of filing this report.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, reporting eight casualties but withholding further details.

Videos shared by the agency showed mangled trucks and lifeless bodies scattered around the crash site.

A towing vehicle called to separate the wrecked trucks was also hit in the process.

There’s a report of a multiple road crash where a truck and a container-laden trailer were in flames, another truck spilling its contents (cartons of biscuits) on the road, a container-laden truck ran onto the barrier with its carrier falling off the bridge into the river, thereby blocking the entire road at Kara Bridge inward Mowe.

“Eight casualties recorded. Effort is in top gear for the recovery and evacuation of the vehicles involved.

“Traffic backlog on Ogunnusi Road, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Officers and other emergency first responders are on the ground,” LASTMA said.

A police officer, a truck driver’s assistant, and two other individuals were among those killed. Two others, including a motorboy, sustained injuries.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olorundare Jimoh, said five articulated vehicles were involved in the collision, adding that preliminary findings suggested brake failure as the cause.

We have a case of a multiple accident, which is still under investigation,” the CP told Channels Television.

” Unfortunately, we lost a police inspectorer. All those responsible for the accident will be prosecuted.”

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other emergency responders were on the scene to clear the wreckage and manage the situation.

The gridlock from the crash extended to the Lagos-bound lane as some motorists drove against traffic to escape the congestion.

Meanwhile, commercial drivers took advantage of the situation to increase fares. Passengers travelling from Berger to Oshodi were charged between ₦2,000 and ₦2,500 — double the usual ₦1,000 to ₦1,200 fare.

The Kara Bridge tragedy occurred less than 24 hours after another truck accident on Otedola Bridge in Lagos.
