The action followed a High Court ruling in Awka, which sentenced Akwa Okuko to 11 months in prison for his involvement in ritual practices called “Oke Ite” and other related offences.
The shrine, located in Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area, was taken down by Agunechemba security personnel under the supervision of Mr. Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser on Community Security to Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Justice Jude Obiora of the Anambra State High Court delivered the sentence on February 27 after Akwa Okuko pleaded guilty to charges filed by the state government.
Akwa Okuko was arraigned alongside two other native doctors—Onyebuchi Okocha, known as Onyeze Jesus, and Ekene Igboekweze, also called Eke Hit—under separate case numbers.
The government accused them of several offences, including conspiracy to commit crimes such as kidnapping, fraud through claims of supernatural powers, promoting Oke Ite rituals that allegedly helped criminals, and breaking the Anambra Homeland Security Law, which aims to curb the activities of native doctors providing “spiritual cover” for criminals.
Under a plea bargain, Akwa Okuko was convicted on some of the counts, while others were dismissed.
The judge ordered that he serve the remaining 11 months of his sentence at Awka Correctional Center, waiving a previously imposed N60 million fine.
The court also ruled that Nwangwu’s shrine in Oba be destroyed and prohibited him from practicing Oke Ite or administering charms in the future.
He is required to serve as an ambassador for youth re-orientation and entrepreneurship, and upon release, he must publicly denounce Oke Ite and related practices.
Akwa Okuko’s lawyer, Sylvester Iwuoba, confirmed that the sentence followed an agreement with the state government and said his client would honor the terms.
The shrine itself, which contained Oke Ite pots, images of people, molded figures, clothes, and other ritual items, was dismantled piece by piece by security personnel.
