The decision was announced in a statement by House spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi.
He said lawmakers were informed through an internal memo from the Speaker’s office on Friday night.
According to him, the matter carries constitutional weight and national importance, making urgent legislative attention necessary.
The House said the special sitting shows its readiness to act quickly on issues that could significantly affect Nigeria’s democracy.
Discussions are expected to center on legislative steps connected to INEC’s timetable, in line with the National Assembly’s constitutional responsibilities.
“All legislative business relating to the matter is expected to be addressed expeditiously,” the statement said.
“Honourable Members have been strongly advised to prioritise attendance, given the importance of the issues under consideration.”
The House also restated their commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through careful and responsive lawmaking, assuring Nigerians that their actions would serve the public interest.
KanyiDaily recalls that the INEC had earlier announced that presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly polls will take place on March 6, 2027.
The commission also set May 22 to June 20, 2026, as the period for political parties to conduct their primaries.
However, the timetable has drawn concerns from some Nigerians, particularly Muslims, who noted that the election dates fall during Ramadan.
Atiku Abubakar argued that fasting during the holy month could affect voter participation as well as the performance of election officials, observers, and logistics teams.
