IGP Kayode Egbetokun Resigns As Inspector General Of Police

Kayode Egbetokun has stepped down as Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP).

A source in the presidency told Channels Television on Tuesday that he resigned from the position on Tuesday, February, 24.

However, the Nigeria Police Force has not yet released an official statement about his resignation.

There is no information yet on who will replace him.

Bola Tinubu appointed Egbetokun as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023.

His appointment was later confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.

The final phase of his time in office was surrounded by debate over how long he stayed in the position.

Under the Police Act 2020, Egbetokun, who turned 60 in September 2024, was expected to retire upon reaching the mandatory retirement age or after 35 years of service.

When he remained in office beyond that point, civil society groups and other critics questioned the decision.

They argued that allowing him to continue went against police service rules and could affect discipline within the force.

At the time, police authorities insisted that his stay was not an extension but part of the four-year term stated in his original appointment letter.

In July 2024, the National Assembly amended the Police Act to allow an Inspector-General of Police to complete the full term listed in their appointment letter.

The amendment bill was sent to both the Senate and the House of Representatives by President Tinubu and was passed by lawmakers in both chambers.
