The incident came to public attention after a video circulating online showed uniformed military officers exchanging punches in a heated confrontation.
In the video, the driver of a Hilux vehicle labelled “Naval Police” was seen stepping out of the truck and engaging in a serious argument with someone inside another vehicle.
He later returned to his vehicle, but moments after, a soldier carrying a rifle approached and threw a punch, which quickly sparked a larger fight.
The situation soon escalated into a full scuffle, with sticks and other objects reportedly used as the confrontation unfolded in public view.
The clash happened as President Tinubu was departing from the venue of an event in Bayelsa.
The incident has triggered reactions from many Nigerians, who criticised it as yet another sign of poor discipline among security personnel.
Responding to the incident in a post on X on Saturday, the Director of Naval Information, Abi Folorunso, said the officers involved have been detained.
“The affected personnel are in custody and already undergoing appropriate administrative and disciplinary procedures in accordance with extant military regulations,” he wrote.
