In a post shared on his X page on Thursday, Melaye compared borrowing levels under past and present administrations.
He claimed that during the eight-year tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the country borrowed about N83 trillion, despite maintaining a fuel subsidy at the time.
He went on to express concern that under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria has reportedly borrowed around N158 trillion within just three years, even after the removal of fuel subsidy.
Dino Melaye questioned the purpose of the loans, asking where the borrowed funds have been spent.
He warned that the trend suggests Nigeria is becoming heavily reliant on borrowing to run its affairs.
“Buhari with subsidy borrowed 83 trillion in 8 years while Tinubu without subsidy borrowed 158 trillion in 3 years.
“We have become a chattered borrowing nation. Where is the borrowed money please?” he said.
KanyiDaily recalls that Dino Melaye recently come under heavy criticism after posting a video in which he condemned Nigeria’s leadership while showing off a comfortable lifestyle abroad.
