Health Workers Stage Protest In Abuja Over New Regulatory Bill

Health workers, under the Joint Health Sector Unions and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations, staged a protest at the Unity Fountain over a proposed reform bill being considered by the National Assembly of Nigeria.

The protesters disagreed with the bill, warning that it could reshape how the health sector is regulated in the country.

According to them, the proposal aims to bring all medical professions under the authority of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

They argue that this would weaken existing professional bodies and disrupt the balance within the system.

The workers insisted that each healthcare profession already has its own regulatory council, and placing them under one body could push other professionals into a lower position.

They also claimed the bill could make non-doctor healthcare workers feel like they are being treated as less important compared to medical doctors.

The group said they plan to move to the National Assembly complex to formally present their concerns to lawmakers and demand a review of the bill.
