FG Increases Allowance For Civil Servants, Expands Welfare Benefits

The Federal Government has approved an increase in allowances and welfare packages for civil servants as part of efforts to improve motivation across the public sector.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Didi Walson-Jack said the changes will affect workers under both the consolidated public service salary structure (CONPSS) and the consolidated research and allied institutions salary structure (CONRAISS), ensuring that employees across different levels benefit.

She explained that the reforms, approved by the federal executive council, include adjustments to various allowances that will apply to all grade levels, leading to higher overall earnings for both junior and senior staff.

According to her, several key allowances have been increased, including duty tour allowance (DTA), estacode, and book allowance.

Walson-Jack added that most of the allowances listed in the Public Service Rules are being reviewed.

She said that one of the notable changes is that civil servants attending approved training programmes will now receive full DTA, even if the training takes place within their city of residence.

Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” she said.

Walson-Jack also announced a new exit package for workers under the contributory pension scheme.

She said that starting from January 1, 2026, retiring civil servants will receive 100 percent of their total annual earnings as a one-time benefit, in addition to their pension.

She said the move is aimed at helping retirees leave service with better financial support and dignity.

The government confirmed the implementation of an employee compensation scheme to provide financial assistance to workers who suffer injuries or die as a result of job-related incidents.
