17 House Of Rep Members Dump ADC For NDC

The House of Representatives on Tuesday experienced a major political shake-up as 17 lawmakers dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during plenary.

The lawmakers, who represent different parts of the country, including Kano, Anambra, Lagos, Edo, and Rivers States, individually presented their resignation letters on the House floor.

The defectors all pointed to ongoing internal disputes in the ADC, which they said have affected the party from the national level down to local wards.

One of the defectors, Yusuf Umar Datti, who represents Kura/Madobi/Garun Mallam Federal Constituency in Kano State, said the crisis in ADC made it difficult for him to effectively deliver on his responsibilities to his constituents.

Another lawmaker, Harris Okonkwo from Idemili North/Idemili South Federal Constituency in Anambra State, said his decision followed extensive consultations with political leaders and people in his constituency.

Other lawmakers who also moved from the ADC to the NDC include Sani Adamu (Minjibir/Ungogo, Kano); Thaddeus Attah (Eti-Osa, Lagos); Deputy Minority Whip, George Ozodinobi (Njikoka/Anaocha/Dunukofia, Anambra); Lilian Obiageli (Awka North/Awka South, Anambra); and OluwaSeyi Sowunmi (Ojo, Lagos).

Additional defectors listed are Peter Anekwe (Anambra East/West); Zakari Umar Mukhtari (Tarauni, Kano); George Olawande (Amuwo Odofin, Lagos); Murphy Osaro Omoruyi (Egor/Ikpoba-Okha, Edo); Umezuruike Manuchim (Port Harcourt I, Rivers); Emeka Idu (Onitsha North/South, Anambra); and Jesse Onuakalusi (Oshodi-Isolo, Lagos).

Others include Ifeanyi Uzokwe (Nnewi North/South/Ekwusigo, Anambra); Afam Ogene (Ogbaru, Anambra); and Kamilu Ado (Wudil/Garko, Kano).

In a separate move, Leke Abejide, who represents Yagba Federal Constituency, also announced his departure from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The wave of defections drew concern from some members of the House, who noted that political instability and shifting alliances are becoming more frequent ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Speaker acknowledged all the resignation letters and wished the lawmakers well in their new political platforms, following parliamentary tradition.

The development is expected to weaken the ADC’s influence in the House, while strengthening the position of the NDC among minority parties.

KanyiDaily also reported that Aminu Gwarzo, a former deputy governor of Kano State, has dumped the ADC just one month after joining the party.
