The incident was confirmed in a statement on Tuesday by Sirajo Kamba, Director of Sharia at the state Hisbah board.
According to him, the suspect was found in a woman’s residence located in the Badariya area of Birnin Kebbi.
Kamba explained that residents raised an alarm around midnight on Monday after noticing the man quietly entering the woman’s house, which made them suspicious of inappropriate behaviour.
“The residents suspected an illicit affair contrary to Islamic teachings, hence their decision to formally notify the authority,” the statement reads in part.
“Upon receiving the report, the Kebbi Hisbah Board swiftly deployed officers to investigate.
“When officers arrived, they requested permission to search the house but the woman initially denied that no one was inside.”
Acting on the report, the woman later allowed the officers to carry out a full search, during which the man was found concealed inside a travel bag.
Kamba disclosed that during investigations, it was confirmed that the man and the woman, who is married, were involved in a relationship.
He said both individuals later admitted to the allegations during questioning, adding that the lovers will be taken to court to face charges in line with Islamic law.
