Oil Subsidy, Exchange Rate Cabals Want Me Dead — President Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu claimed that some powerful people affected by his economic reforms want him dead because of changes he introduced after becoming president in 2023.

The president’s message was delivered by former Ogun State governor Olusegun Osoba during an event organised by National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) in Lagos to celebrate the group’s 32nd anniversary.

According to Osoba, Tinubu said his decision to end fuel subsidy payments and introduce a unified foreign exchange system upset certain influential groups that previously benefited from the old arrangements.

The president reportedly stated that some people who made profits through foreign exchange manipulation and subsidy-related activities are unhappy because the reforms have blocked those opportunities.

Tinubu said these groups are resisting his policies and allegedly attempting to create instability in the country because of the economic changes.

Despite the opposition, he insisted that he would continue pushing ahead with reforms aimed at restructuring and improving Nigeria’s economy.

Osoba quoted the president as saying that some of those affected by the policies would prefer him out of power, but he remains committed to carrying out the reforms regardless of pressure.

He said, “As for security, he says, I should let you know, that he is aware that there is a deliberate attempt to disrupt the peace of this country by people whom he knew he had offended by canceling multiple exchange rates and by canceling oil subsidies.

“He said those cabals who are doing round-tripping will wish him dead any time but he is determined that if that is the only thing he would do, he would make sure he rearranges the economy. No matter what, he is determined to face it. So that’s the message from Mr. President.”

The president also reportedly said that if re-elected for a second term, his administration would introduce more political and structural reforms.

According to Osoba, the president believes his government’s main focus remains economic stability and improving security across Nigeria, especially in parts of the South-West facing growing security challenges.
