Peter Obi Emerges NDC’s Sole Presidential Aspirant For 2027 Election

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has ended the sale of its Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the 2027 presidential race, with indications that Peter Obi is the only person who picked up the forms.

While the presidential process has now closed, the party has given more time to those seeking other positions.

Aspirants for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly now have an extra week to obtain their Expression of Interest Forms.

According to Vanguard, NDC sources said that by the time the deadline passed, Peter Obi was the sole presidential hopeful to complete the purchase.

In a statement, the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, confirmed that the earlier deadline of 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, has been shifted to midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026, but only for non-presidential positions.

He made it clear that the window for collecting presidential Expression of Interest Forms has officially closed.

According to the party’s timetable, screening of aspirants who have already obtained and submitted their forms will begin on Tuesday, May 19, and run until Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

Those who pass the screening stage will then be allowed to collect and return their Nomination Forms between May 20 and May 26.

The party warned that there will be no further extension beyond the new deadline and advised all aspirants to follow the rules and timelines carefully.

The NDC also instructed all candidates to appear for screening and pre-qualification interviews at designated centres across the country, bringing along required documents such as academic certificates, proof of age, passport photographs, voter’s card, party membership card, and a detailed CV. Each document must be submitted in six copies.

The party explained that screening decisions will consider factors like public acceptance, local realities, competence, and the overall character of each aspirant.

It also asked the screening committee to factor in its policy on inclusion for women, young people, and persons with disabilities.

The NDC encouraged aspirants to work together and consider consensus options, noting that only those who pass screening will be allowed to move forward in the process.

With this development, Peter Obi who recently dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the NDC, is now in a strong position to become the party’s sole presidential candidate.
