Speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday, Momodu explained that the current cooperation among some opposition leaders is not based on true unity but rather a response to pressure from the ruling party.
“Tinubu forced all of them together. And that is why they all moved in one direction. Which would have been beautiful, because it would have been like a two-party race,” Momodu said.
Momodu made this statement while reacting to Obi and Kwankwaso leaving the ADC.
Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, exited the party on Sunday along with Kwankwaso, the former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party.
They both cited internal legal issues and an unhealthy political environment as reasons for their decision.
Their move has led to speculation about a possible joint presidential run in the 2027 election.
However, Momodu warned that things are different now compared to 2023, and no candidate can assume they will automatically keep their previous supporters.
“Are you saying that Tinubu will retain all the 8 million plus people that voted for him last time? How are you sure… What is the guarantee that Obi and Kwankwaso are the only people who will retain all those who voted for them last time? The situation has changed,” he queried.
He added that if Tinubu allows a truly free and fair election, “he might not even get 3 million votes.”
Momodu also pointed to recent election results where some G5 governors failed to win senatorial seats in states like Enugu, Abia, and Benue, saying this shows that voters are shifting their loyalties.
On the issue of alliances, Dele Momodu said the ADC remains committed to its goals.
He welcomed new members but made it clear that the party would not accept pressure or the idea that success depends on one individual.
“Those who want to join should join. Those who do not want to join, you cannot succumb to blackmail. That only one man can make us win,” he declared.
He also recalled that the 2019 partnership between Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi did not lead to victory, and their separate attempts in 2023 also failed to remove the ruling party.
Advising politicians to stay calm, he shared a lesson from his late mother, warning that rushing away from problems can lead to bigger ones.
He wished Obi well and emphasized that no one should be forced out of the race because of another person’s influence.
