“Nigeria Is Oil-Producing Country That Has Never Had Electricity” – Kemi Badenoch

UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has blamed Nigeria’s long-running electricity problems on poor governance and weak public policies.

Speaking about how her childhood influenced her political beliefs, Badenoch said Nigeria is rich in natural resources, especially oil, but has failed to use those resources to improve the lives of its people because of years of poor leadership and bad policy decisions.

Nigeria is an oil-producing country that has never had electricity. “It is very easy to have resources under the ground, but st¥pid public policy means that you can’t use them.” she said

Badenoch also compared some policies proposed in the United Kingdom to those introduced by past military governments in Nigeria during the 1980s and 1990s.

And I see quite a lot of what Ed Miliband is doing as being very much like what the Nigerian military dictatorships were doing in the 1980s and 1990s,” she stated.

According to her, policies that give governments greater control over the economy and focus heavily on redistributing wealth often damage economic growth and can eventually leave countries in financial trouble.

The government’s going to take control. We know what’s best. We’re going to redistribute. These are st¥pid ideas that eventually just bankrupt the country,” she said.

She explained that her experiences growing up in Nigeria continue to shape her views on governance, economic management and public policy.

Badenoch said witnessing the challenges faced by a developing country influenced her belief in policies aimed at preventing similar problems in the United Kingdom.

“Fundamentally, my views about how we should run our country come from growing up in a place that was very poor.

“You grow up in a third-world country and you look at why it is termed ‘third world,’ and I don’t want that to happen here,” she added.
