Music stars Shakira and Burna Boy thrilled fans during the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Estadio Azteca on Thursday.

The performance comes just before the tournament’s opening game between hosts Mexico and South Africa.

This year’s World Cup is being jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

This year’s competition features an expanded format with 48 teams and 104 matches, ending with the final in New Jersey on July 19.

Thousands of spectators packed the renovated Estadio Azteca, a historic venue that previously hosted the World Cup finals in 1970 and 1986.

During the ceremony, dancers performed around a massive replica of the World Cup trophy while fireworks lit up the sky above the 80,000-seat stadium.

One of the biggest moments of the event came when Shakira and Burna Boy took to the stage to perform “Dai Dai,” the tournament’s official anthem.

Their performance drew loud cheers from the crowd.

Other artists who entertained fans before kickoff included J Balvin and renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, helping to build the festive atmosphere inside the stadium.

Fans in attendance were clearly enjoying the occasion.

“It’s already a celebration in Mexico,” said 40-year-old supporter Ingrid Orozco.

Nineteen-year-old Gustavo Ramírez also shared his excitement, describing the experience as “amazing.”
