Tinubu, who spoke during an event at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was reacting to the recent public debate over his wife’s comments about small businesses.
The President made the remark while acknowledging guests during his speech at the Presidential Press Corps Dinner held on Thursday.
A video released by Aso Rock TV captured the moment as Tinubu greeted dignitaries before turning his attention to his his wife.
“Good evening, gentlemen of the press, ladies and gentlemen, my dear wife, the First Lady, Iya Alakara,” he said, prompting laughter from those in attendance.
The playful nickname follows Remi Tinubu’s recent advice to Nigerian women to explore small businesses such as selling akara (bean cakes), roasted corn, and kuli-kuli through the Renewed Hope Initiative empowerment programme.
According to her, these businesses require only a small amount of capital to get started.
Her comments, however, drew mixed reactions online.
While some people supported the idea of encouraging entrepreneurship, many others argued that the suggestion overlooked the harsh economic realities facing Nigerians and failed to reflect the financial struggles experienced by many families.
