Boxer Prichard Colon Dies At 33 After Suffering Brain Injury In Fight

Former Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33, nearly 11 years after suffering a serious brain injury during a professional fight.

His father, Richard Colon, confirmed his death in a message shared on social media.

Prichard Colon was seriously injured during his 2015 bout against Terrell Williams in Fairfax, Virginia.

During the fight, the boxer complained several times about punches to the back of his head.

He collapsed in the changing room after the bout and was later diagnosed with a brain haemorrhage.

Doctors performed surgery to reduce the swelling in his brain before placing him in a medically induced coma.

Prichard Colon remained in the coma for 221 days.

After waking, he was left with severe disabilities and spent the rest of his life requiring round-the-clock care.

He could not walk or speak and remained in a vegetative state until his death on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

In his tribute, Richard Colon announced that his son had passed away, saying the family was grateful for the years of support and prayers they had received.

He also revealed that he had hoped to fulfil his son’s wish of taking him on holiday to Puerto Rico, but the trip never happened.

Good morning, my people. I regret to inform you of the departure of my son Prichard from this earthly world,” Richard Colon wrote on Facebook.

“Now he is in a better world. I did everything possible to fulfil his wish, his dream of bringing him on vacation to Puerto Rico as he so desired, but it couldn’t be done.

“Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. As much as you can, please keep us in your prayers.”

Before the fight that changed his life, Colon had built an unbeaten professional record of 16 victories, including 13 wins by knockout.

His bout with Williams ended in controversy. Colon appeared to receive several blows to the back of his head, leading to Williams losing a point for an illegal punch.

Prichard Colon was later penalised twice for a low blow before being knocked down in the ninth round.

His corner mistakenly believed the fight had ended and removed his gloves. Colon was subsequently disqualified.

Following the incident, Colon’s parents filed a lawsuit seeking more than $50 million in damages from the ringside doctor and promoters involved in the event.

The legal case has yet to be resolved.

Prichard Colon’s death brings an end to a long and difficult period for his family, who had cared for him since the devastating injury in 2015.
