NEPZA tightens import checks to curb illegal imports – Authority

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) has ordered stricter checks on imports into Free Trade Zones to curb illegal importation and other regulatory breaches.

Kanyi Daily reports that NEPZA Managing Director Olufemi Ogunyemi announced the measures in a statement issued by the Authority’s Head of Corporate Communications, Martins Odeh, on Tuesday, saying operators must comply with regulations governing transactions within the secured marketplace.

“Effective immediately, the Authority is tightening its enforcement posture against the allegations of illegal importation of containers into our controlled spaces,” Ogunyemi said.

The measures will include intensified inspections, closer scrutiny of import documentation and coordinated action with relevant enforcement agencies. Operators found violating established procedures will face penalties provided under the law.

Ogunyemi warned against mis-declaring goods, bypassing lawful import and export procedures or moving containers through unauthorised channels. He said such conduct would be identified and addressed by the Authority.

He also said illegal imports undermine lawful commerce, expose communities to unregulated goods and weaken confidence in the Free Trade Zone system. Ogunyemi urged operators and their associations to strengthen self-policing and ensure that the actions of a minority do not affect compliant businesses.

NEPZA said the enforcement measures form part of efforts to maintain a fair and transparent business environment while positioning the Free Trade Zones as investment and export centres. The Authority has also been pursuing partnerships aimed at attracting investment, developing shared infrastructure, creating jobs and expanding export-oriented production.

Businesses operating in Nigeria’s Free Trade Zones benefit from tax incentives, customs duty waivers and other concessions designed to encourage investment and reduce production costs. NEPZA said 63 Free Trade Zones currently host more than 700 enterprises, with operators also expected to support local capacity development through activities such as training Nigerians.
