Former Sokoto Senator Abubakar Gada Dumps ADC For PDP

Former Sokoto East senator, Abubakar Gada, has dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after barely six months in the party, bringing an end to weeks of rumours about his next political move.

Addressing supporters in Sokoto on Saturday, Abubakar Gada announced that he is returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general election.

The former lawmaker said his decision was based on the need to revive and strengthen the PDP in the state, which he believes has suffered from weak leadership.

Gada accused former governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of failing to fully commit to the ADC despite earlier indications that they would jointly build the party in Sokoto.

According to Gada, both he and Tambuwal were initially seen as leaders of the ADC in the state, but leadership, he said, requires active involvement and responsibility.

“My humble self and Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal were considered the leaders to drive the party in the state,” he said.

“But leadership means identifying with the people, showing commitment and taking responsibility. For six months, we raised the hope and tempo of the party, but he refused to come and sit down with us to build it.”

Gada also claimed that Tambuwal sent mixed signals by allegedly engaging with the APC, being mentioned in talks around a possible vice-presidential slot, and at the same time failing to formally register with the ADC or encourage his supporters to do so.

“You cannot be talking to APC on one hand, being promoted as vice-presidential option for Peter Obi on the other hand, and still refuse to register or allow your followership to register in ADC. This level of contradiction is not partnership for progress,” he said.

Gada argued that the situation left the ADC “in limbo” in Sokoto and forced him to “take destiny into our hands by returning to PDP.”

The former senator also criticised what he described as a lack of appreciation, pointing to Tambuwal’s rise from Speaker of the House of Representatives to a two-term governor.

The ADC gained attention in Sokoto politics in 2024 following internal disputes within the PDP.

Tambuwal, who governed the state from 2015 to 2023 and currently serves as a senator, has not reacted publicly to Gada’s claims.

Abubakar Gada is expected to officially complete his return to the PDP at the state level in the coming weeks, as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 elections.
