A Lagos high court has ordered Imperial medical Centre to pay the sum of N7 million (Naira) as damages to Mrs. Georgina Ahamefule, an auxiliary nurse who was sacked from the hospital because of her HIV positive status.
In  her judgement, Justice Yetunde Idowu held that the nurse was wrongfully dismissed because of her HIV status. She said the sum of five million Naira should be paid as damages for wrongful dismissal. She also ordered the hospital and its medical director, Dr. Alex Molokwu to pay Ahamefule the sum of two million Naira as severance package.
The judgement is coming 12 years after Ahamefule decided to seek redress in court through a non governmental organization- Social and Economic Rights Rights Action Centre (SERAC).
