A businessman from the Republic of Benin, Jean Codo, who is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged €29 million fraud, has died at the Kirikiri prison, Lagos State.
Mr Codo, who owns Transport and Port Management System Limited, was said to have died on Thursday due to lack of proper medical attention.
A court had granted bail to Mr Coco in November 2019, but he could not fulfill the bail conditions. Despite appeals to have him released on a compassionate ground due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Nigerian authorities refused until he died in custody.
The Beninese businessman was said to have collapsed in prison and rushed to the military hospital in Lagos where he lost his life on Thursday morning.
