Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala appointed as DG of World Trade Organisation – Breaking News

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.

The official announcement was made by the global trade body via it’s Twitter account.

“BREAKING: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria is appointed as the next WTO Director-General. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala makes history as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO. Her term starts on the 1st of March 2021.”

Following the convening of the special general council meeting earlier today, it was anticipated that Okonjo-Iweala will be formally appointed DG of the WTO.

Earlier, under Donald Trump, the United State of America Blocked Okonjo-Iweala’s Appointment As WTO DG, Insists On South Korean Myung Hee .

Following Trump’s defeat in the Presidential election, the US government led by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris finally endorsed Okonjo-Iweala for the WTO DG and shortly after, South Korean Trade Minister, Yoo Myung-hee, withdrew her bid to contest.

66-year-old Okonjo-Iweala, by her appointment, becomes the first woman to ever lead the Switzerland-based institution and the first African citizen to take on the role.
