Jigawa Assembly Approves One Month Jail Term For Open Defecation

Jigawa State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking to imposed a one-month jail term for anyone found guilty of open defecation across the state.

The chairman House Committee on Water Resources, Hon Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, a member representing Miga constituency, presented the bill for third reading on Tuesday during the House plenary presided by the Speaker, Hon Idris Garba Jahun.

Dangyatin said the bill has made a provision for the establishment of technical working committee at state and local government levels to support the implementation of the law.

“Also, any person who constructs a house, establish factory or commercial centre must construct toilets in the premises and failure to do so will attract penalties,” he said.

While passing the bill, the Speaker, Hon Idris Garba Jahun said the legislation is aimed at promoting sanitation and public hygiene across the state.

According to him, when the bill was signed into law, any person caught urinating or defecating openly not in house, public toilet and other designated places, will face the wrath of the law.

He explained that under the law, the person can be sentenced to one month imprisonment, committed to community service or minimum of five thousand naira fine.

KanyiDaily recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari had also signed Executive Order 009, seeking to end open defecation in Nigeria by 2025.
