Lagos Government Backs MC Oluomo, Suspends NURTW From Motor Parks

Lagos State Government has suspended the activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in all motor park and garages across the state.

NURTW Suspend MC Oluomo

The announcement came after the national leadership of the NURTW suspended the chairman of the Lagos State chapter, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, over alleged misconduct, insubordination and incitement.

The NURTW national body had accused MC Oluomo of incitementing violence and planning to attack the union branches that fail to obey his instructions.

Following his suspension, MC Oluomo announced the withdrawal of the Lagos NURTW from the national body as he called on the state government to take over the management of motor parks in the state to resolve the crisis in the union.

Lagos Suspend NURTW Activities

In a statement on Thursday, March 10, Lagos commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotoso announced the suspension of the activities of NURTW in the state.

Omotoso said the government has been paying close attention to the unfolding events in the NURTW and had deemed it necessary to suspend their activities to douse the mounting tension regarding the struggle for NURTW leadership in the state.

The statement reads, “The Lagos State Government has been watching closely events in the National Union of Road Transport Workers Union (NURTW). There have been claims and counter claims over the control of the union.

“The Government has a duty to ensure the safety of lives and property of all Lagosians and visitors. Therefore, there is an urgent need to douse the unnecessary tension generated by the leadership tussle in the NURTW and protect the citizenry from the likely fallout of the situation.

“After considering the provisions of the law, the Government hereby suspends the activities of NURTW, which must cease to operate in all parks and garages in Lagos State.

“The Government will set up a Committee to immediately take control of the parks and garages. Members of the committee will be key stakeholders in the sector.

“The Government’s position is premised on its responsibility to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order in all parks and garages in Lagos State.”

This comes just a few days after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) appointed MC Oluomo as an ‘ambassador of War Against Drug Abuse (WADA)’.
