Rev. Fr. Christopher Onotu, the parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kogi State, has been abducted by gunmen in Obangede, Okehi Local Government Area.
It was gathered that the cleric was abducted on Sunday night after the gunmen broke into his bedroom through the window and whisked him away to unknown destination.
Sources said the congregation got to know about the priest’s abduction on Sunday morning when they arrived for the morning mass.
When contacted on Monday morning, the police public relations (PPRO), Williams Ayah confirmed the development, saying a manhunt has been launched to ensure the kidnappers are apprehended and the victim rescued.
Ayah said, “The commissioner has already deployed personnel. A manhunt has been launched for the perpetrators to be arrested.
“We are collaborating with the military, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to ensure the man’s release.”
Priests are increasingly being targeted by gunmen across the country.
KanyiDaily recalls that the Prelate of Methodist Church Nigeria, Samuel Uche had recently narrated how he and two other clerics paid N100m as ransom after they were abducted and tortured by ‘Fulani boys’ in Abia State.
