The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar mourned Brazil football legend, Pele who died on Thursday.
Kanyi Daily earlier reported that Pele, who was a three-time World Cup winner died on Thursday aged 82 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.
The football star had been treated for colon cancer, following surgery to remove a tumour in September 2021, and had required regular medical treatment.
After being admitted back into the hospital at the end of November to re-evaluate his cancer treatment, he was diagnosed with a respiratory infection before subsequently being moved to palliative care when his body became unresponsive to chemotherapy.
The news of his death was confirmed by his daughter, Kely Nascimento on Instagram.
Taking to his official Twitter, Atiku in a short tweet, said Pele is a legend not only to the lovers of the “beautiful game” but to all of humanity.
According to him, the late Brazil star lived a life of impact both on and off the field.
The former vice president described Pele as humble and generous, adding the icon will be sorely missed.
“Pelè is a legend not only to the lovers of the beautiful game but to all of humanity.
“He lived a life of impact both on and off the field.
“He was humble and very generous. He will be sorely missed. May his soul rest in peace,” Atiku wrote.
Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter mourned the soccer star’s demise, saying the legend of Pele endures.
He added that he lived his best life, lived out his destiny, and impacted the football game, immeasurably.
