The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has threatened to take legal action against a newspaper, Peoples Gazette, over a ‘fake and doctored’ leaked audio.

KanyiDaily recalls that Peoples Gazette had published a leaked phone conversation between Peter Obi and Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Church, otherwise called Winners Chapel.

In the audio clip, a voice similar to that of Peter Obi can be heard asking Bishop Oyedepo to speak to the Christians in the South-West and Kwara to vote for him in the presidential poll, describing the election as a “religious war”.

“Daddy, I need you to speak to your people in the South-West and Kwara, the Christians in the South-West and Kwara. This is a religious war. Like I keep saying: if this works, you people will never regret the support,” Obi said in the audio released by Peoples Gazette.

The Labour Party had described the “leaked audio” as deep fake and a product of the propaganda machinery of the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that their ploy to de-market Peter Obi has failed woefully.

The LP presidential candidate in a series of tweets late Wednesday said he is taking legal action against the newspaper which published the viral audio.

“Let me reiterate that the audio call being circulated is fake, and at no time throughout the campaign and now did I ever say, think, or even imply that the 2023 election is, or was a religious war,” Obi tweeted on Wednesday.

“The attempts to manipulate Nigerians is very sad and wicked. Our legal team have been instructed to take appropriate legal actions against Peoples Gazette and others,” he wrote.

Obi also accused APC and Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed and government agencies of plots “to divert our attention from our blatantly stolen mandate is unfortunate and sad.”

The former Anambra State governor further maintained that he is focused on reclaiming his “stolen mandate” from the APC through lawful means.

“While we call on all concerned Nigerians and the international community to implore the APC and the APC led-government to stop their nasty attacks, my focus and commitment to lawfully and peacefully retrieve our mandate to secure and unite our Nation, take Nigeria from consumption to production, pull millions of Nigerians out of multidimensional poverty, especially in the north, and jumpstart prosperity through agricultural, industrial, and technological revolution remain unchanged,” Obi said.

“Elections are over, and we are in court to retrieve our stolen mandate. Let me reiterate that we are doing so through all lawful and peaceful options in line with our legal system and constitution. I continue to implore all Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding.”

KanyiDaily recalls that Bishop David Oyedepo also denied the leaked conversation between him and Peter Obi, saying he never campaigned for any politician, noting that all political parties sought his prayers and advice before the election and he availed them.
