How Missing FUOYE Student, Modupe Deborah Was Found Dead With ‘Eyes Gouged Out’

Modupe Atanda Deborah, a student at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has been found dead after being reported missing.

Modupe Deborah, a student in the Department of Nursing, vanished while studying late at night on Monday, prompting concern among her roommates when she failed to return from her night reading session.

Alarmed by her disappearance, her fellow students initiated a search, during which they stumbled upon her books and study materials near a large pond.

The shocking discovery was made on Wednesday, September 6, when Modupe’s lifeless body was found buried in a shallow grave behind her Faculty.

It was gathered that Atanda’s body was found with her eyes plucked out, and she had sustained severe head injuries, strongly suggesting sexual assault.

Mufutau Ibrahim, the university’s registrar, confirmed the discovery on Thursday and expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and the entire university community.

Ibrahim reiterated that investigations were ongoing in collaboration with national security agencies to bring the culprits to justice. He also called for calm among students and stakeholders.

The statement reads, “It will be recalled that earlier today, the Management had made public the disturbing development of the missing of the deceased and assured that investigation was ongoing as to unravel the whereabouts of the poor students.

“But current information reaching the security outfit of the University has disclosed that the said student is dead.

“While the University Management condoles with the deceased family and the generality of the University community, particularly our dear students, the Management reiterated that investigation is still ongoing and this is being done in collaboration with national security agencies to get to the root of the sad development and bring to book the culprits.

“We, therefore, appeal to students and all other stakeholders to remain calm.“

Earlier on Wednesday, Ibrahim had issued a directive for students to vacate the campus premises immediately to facilitate a thorough investigation into the alleged disappearance.

The university’s registrar also mentioned that national security personnel had been deployed to manage the situation and that several suspects had been arrested.

Ibrahim conveyed the university’s sadness over the situation and assured the community that all necessary steps were being taken. He emphasized the deployment of armed security personnel for patrol and surveillance and vowed to uncover the perpetrators of this heinous act.

In the statement titled ‘Press release on current occurrence in the university’, Ibrahim said, “As a matter of fact, several arrests have been made of suspects”.

The registrar stated, “The University Management has received a report on the case of Ms Modupe Deborah Atanda, who was reported missing as of Wednesday, 6th September 2023; and management is saddened at the current turn of events.

“It is pertinent to promptly inform the entire university community that immediate steps have been taken in this regard, as National Security Personnel have been drafted to handle the situation.

“To this end, all students (Stream A and any other full-time student still on any of the University’s campuses) are hereby directed to vacate the premises with immediate effect to ensure a proper, holistic and unimpeded thorough investigation, please.

“It is worthy of note that armed security personnel have been quickly deployed for patrol, surveillance and security purposes.

“Rest assured that all steps would be taken by the university to fish out any and all culpable persons, and they shall face the full and unmitigated consequences of their action(s).

“A new resumption date for all students would be conveyed accordingly. We sincerely regret any inconveniences these may have caused,” the registrar stated.
