EFCC Detains Former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele After DSS Released Him

Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Godwin Emefiele, who is currently being interrogated at the National Headquarters of the EFCC in Jabi, Abuja, was picked up on Thursday night, less than an hour after he regained his freedom from the custody of the Department of State Services

The former CBN Governor had been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since June, following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.

Following his suspension, Emefiele was directed to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the then-deputy governor of the operations directorate at the apex bank.

The day after, the DSS announced that Emefiele was in its custody for “some investigative reasons”.

On July 25, he faced a two-count charge related to the “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Lagos and was subsequently granted bail in the sum of N20 million.

The federal government later withdrew the two-count charge on August 17.

However, a new 20-count charge was filed against him, alleging a conspiracy to commit procurement fraud, among other offenses.

The agreement required Emefiele to resign as CBN governor and “disgorge” some assets.

On September 22, the CBN officially confirmed Emefiele’s resignation after Olayemi Cardoso was appointed as the new governor of the apex bank.

Kanyi Daily recalls that nigerians on social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter) are reacting to pictures and videos showing the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele in what appears like he shed tears in court.
