I Wanted To Be A Rapper Because I Felt Singing Was For Weak People – Victony

Nigerian singer, Victony said he wanted to become a rapper because he felt that singing was for weak people.

Victony, who disclosed this while speaking in the latest episode of the Zero Conditions podcast, said he began exploring the Afrobeats genre in 2020, with “Soweto” being one of his initial attempts in this musical style.

He revealed that he had been aware of his singing ability but had resisted it, stressing that he considered it an escape for those he perceived as weak.

The singer admitted to initially favoring the energetic persona of a rapper and aspiring to be one. However, upon delving into singing, he discovered that it is equally technical and demanding as rapping.

Victony said the realization challenged his preconceptions and opened up a new perspective on the technical intricacies of both singing and rapping, leading him to appreciate the complexity of vocal artistry.

He said, “2020 was when I started doing Afrobeats. In fact, ‘Soweto’ was one of my first trials at Afrobeats.

“Honestly, I used to know I could sing but I just refused to. Because I just felt like it was for weak people. I felt like it was an escape for weak people.

“I always loved that rapper energy and I wanted to be a rapper. But when I started singing, I realised that it is just as technical as rapping.”

KanyiDaily recalls that Victony, whose real name is Anthony Ebuka Victor, recently brought joy to many less-privileged and disabled people in Lagos.
