Sanusi was crowned as the 16th Emir at the Kano state government house on Friday, May 24, 2024, after his initial dethronement by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
The former CBN governor was dethroned as Kano Emir in 2020 after a conflict withGanduje who created four new emirates in 2019 under a controversial law to reduce Sanusi’s influence.
However, a new law passed by the Kano State House of Assembly has abolished these four additional emirates and reinstated Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano announced Sanusi’s reinstatement on Thursday after signing the new Kano Emirate Council Law.
Sanusi was reinstated as the Emir of Kano despite the ruling of a federal high court in Kano which ordered the state government not to enforce the new Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024, which replaced the 2019 version.
Judge Mohammed Liman instructed the government to “suspend” and “not give effect to the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, 2024,” as it affects all offices and institutions of the Emirate Council created under the 2019 law.
